Mining began in the Pilbara with the discovery of Gold in the late 1880s. The town takes its name from Mount Newman, a peak 1055 m above sea level. The mount was named in 1896 after Aubrey Woodward Newman, an explorer on a mapping expedition, who died of typhoid fever just before reaching the area. In 1957 a veteran prospector A. S "stan ' Hilditich, discovered a massive Iron ore deposit about 15 kms south-east of Mount Newman. This was named Mount Whaleback, as the hill resembled the shape of a humpback whale, it now is the world's largest single open cut iron mine.
Newman is a great spot to break your journey, situated at the eastern gateway to the Pilbara, a well equipped specialty shops, banks, post office, accommodation, restaurants, recreational clubs and service and repairs for all vehicles.
Over the past 40 years the region has played a key role in the establishment of the Pilbara as Western Australia's premier mining region and one of the economic power houses of the nation.

Numans has undertaken the acquisition of land for our next exciting development. In 2009 Numans will commence the development of a 500 bed Accommodation Village adjoining the town of Newman, Numans is completing all feasibility and building license aspects for this project having achieved Shire approval of its comprehensive development application. Expressions of interest are now invited.

The village is well located to service personnel working within the Newman region either from town or on satellite mine sites. Our Accommodation Village in Newman will provide high quality accommodation and amenities in a landscaped environment with security access.
The emphasis will be on providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for residents with excellent facilities, including a fully serviced restaurant and other quality facilities to ensure a pleasant stay in the Village.
